37?!

I know that 37 degrees doesn't seem cold to everyone who doesn't live here, but I think it should at least count as chilly, right? I mean, we're talking frost on the ground that doesn't disappear as soon as the sun hits it. And I took the dog walking, which means I was outdoors, which should count for something, right? Right?

OK, I also know that I've turned into a wimp since moving down here, and I should just hush up now.

I was going to entitle this post "loot", since that's what I'm going to show you. I am doing some knitting, but I have no photos yet; I'll show you some of the kimono the next time I post, I promise. Before I show you my holiday gains (in the fiber realm, people, you don't want to see any of my other gains, I guarantee it), a picture or two from the adventure that Rick and the girls took on New Year's day.

[big blank space]

You can imagine me gritting my teeth in frustration right now. The recent upgrade of my computer to Leopard (not my idea, I should mention; my general theory about computers is, if it ain't broke, leave it alone, look the other way, knock on wood, and don't talk about how not broken it is lest the Computer Fates hear and decide to punish me for hubris) has caused some serious strife to arise between my camera and my computer. Sometimes things work just fine. Sometimes, for no readily discernible reason, the computer refuses to load anything from the camera at all. Sometimes, apparently (this is a new trick as of this very moment), the computer will upload the photos, merrily save them to a file, and then refuse absolutely to allow me to manipulate or open them, even though it will show me the thumbnails of the inaccessible photos. Grrr...

Just tried again, and nope, no uploads. So, what I would have shown you is a series of quite adorable photos of the girls in ski gear on a chair lift. They all went skiing, which I so wanted to do as well, but I decided that discretion was the better part of valor in this case, and stayed home to nurse my cold. It is finally starting to get better, for which thank goodness, because I was tired of feeling bad. They all had great fun, and are already planning another trip sooner rather than later, so I should be able to join them for that one.

I also would have showed you pictures of my new Golding spindle (scroll down to the Celtic ring spindle), which I am loving. Between that and my turkish spindle, I'm very happy, although I'm sure I'll be keeping my eye out for more; sometimes I like the portability and flexibility of spindling as opposed to using one of my wheels. I also would have shown you the lovely roving that Rick got me to go with the spindle (so wise, my husband; he also apparently carefully considered the spindle's weight, given that I like to spin and use slightly finer yarns, and got me one that wasn't too heavy -- does he pay attention or what?). He and the girls also got me some yarn, which I'm dying to dive into, but I've promised myself to get some things off the needles before starting anything new (we'll see how long I hold out). I might also have shown you the little present (mine's a gorgeous blue) I got for myself from The Loopy Ewe. And last but not least, I might have shown you a present that I got from my sister-in-law, which is serving me well as I plan my foray into designing and knitting my very own sweater just for me.

So, there you have it. The post that would have been, had my camera and computer not gotten all snippy. I think I'm going to go knit now and let them sit in time-out. That'll show them.

Don't you just love modern technology! We woke up to snow this morning which, we discovered when we went for a walk, was covering a layer or ice. Much better being inside

Technology is such a wondrous thing! I thought it was supposed to make our lives easier?! At least you can still blog - right?

It was 37* here yesterday too - but you would call it 99*F! It was hot and humid - outside at 10pm it was still a sauna! I did my 10,000 steps inside the house with the air-con on yesterday and will do again today!

ah, what i wouldn't give for a balmy 37F day. today that is 80 degrees warmer than fairbanks. seriously. we've had -40s for over a week now, and honestly, i won't miss it if it goes. especially since i'm back to work now and can't cuddle up on my couch and ignore it anymore.

links are almost as good as photos, although hopefully you can get the camera and computer to get along again soon. maybe you could "accidentally" do one of those system recoveries to before the leopard was installed....

On a day such as this when technology doesn't work, you almost feel like declaring you're a Luddite! Put those things in time out!

I do look forward to seeing your loot when you can. I'll be jealous of course...

Half your luck! It was nearly 40C here yesterday, and it didn't cool down a lot in the evening either. The cool change isn't expected until tomorrow evening. We swelter, and there's no aircon at home.

I've been using Leopard for a good while now, and I've not heard of so many problems with it. Do you use iphoto?

You do realize that if you go skiing it will probably be colder than 37,even at Big Bear? :) feel better soon

I have only just nearly got over the upgrade to a new computer ... my photo library is nearly back to where it was, the printer has fallen off the network at least once ... and still the graphics seem prettier which is a small distraction while i search menus for my much loved commands. Spindle wise - that would have to be one of the most beautiful spindles I have ever seen,

In California, that's downright frigid. I used to think that people in Seattle were wimps for freaking out over half an inch of snow, but I've come to realize that severe temperature and weather are all part of where you live, and a wimp in the northeast is a hardy soul in some places. I'm not looking forward to being the wimp again next winter when we're in Wisconsin!

Good luck with your warring technology, and I hope it recovers soon, so we can see pictures. =)

Oh brrrr --- no, I understand, really I do. When the first cold weather hits and I think, damn, it must be about 10 and it's only 32, it must be what you warm climate folks go thru. And thanks for the leopard info- I've been thinking of upgrading, now I may hold off.

It's 30F here this morning, much colder yesterday morning but then, I don't live in SUNNY CALIFORNIA :^)
Lovely and delightful gifts all 'round!
I caught Bobby gazing at my computer, he then asked if I'd like to have Leopard... I kindly asked him to avert his eyes and slowly back off.
I'm with you, 'if it ain't broken'.

That sounds pretty chilly, if you're used to warmer!

Re: the computer- are you trying to download using the camera software? If so, you might try just plugging the camera to the computer, and looking for the camera icon, and look through whatever folders you find there. Most computer/camera combos I've used treat the camera memory like a flash drive and will let you just select them all, copy and paste them into your regular picture folder. You might have to look through a few levels of folders to find them is all.

Hey, I have a bunch of posts (mostly in my head) that look a lot like this one! But from lack of gumption, not from technology demons. Or are they devils? And what's the difference?

Oh dear.

Aren't you glad you knit when you get the freak cold temperatures? I think your family needs mittens, just in case it happens again.

Your hubby's a gem. As for 37--yeah, my husband had to scrape ice off the windshield this week for the first time since we moved to northern California, and we don't even have a scraper anymore.

37 is cold. Cold!

Bad computers. My mouse absolutely refused to work yesterday. Today I have a new keyboard AND mouse. Ha.

I'm sure the stuff you have to show is lovely. I look forward to the pictures. I want to see pretty roving to dream about.

I'm in a bit of a bad patch, and without knitting, I wouldn't be coping right now. My life's still not pretty, but I'm managing.

Anyway, I hope your computer starts behaving again soon.

yes, 37 degrees is freezing. and it ain't suppose to freeze in most of california.

love all your "pictures" and yes, i "love" to upgrade to new stuff...yeah, right. just shoot me!

hope your cold is better.

Our weather varies enough that whether 37 F is cold depends on the season. In June, that's cold. Right now, it's walk-to-the-car-with-your-coat-unzipped weather.

The verification is "snersist," and now I want to know what Snersism is!

Oh, all those gifts are beautiful! I know because you say they are.

And sometimes it is a blessing when DH's aren't observant. My DD knit W's gift right in front of him and he never noticed.
